Bhupalpally: An incident of poaching took place in the forests of Mahadevpur in Jayashanker Bhupalapally district during night hours on Sunday. Two spotted deer were killed by hunters, who attempted to transport the dead animals in a car from the forest at around 11 pm. However, they left the carcasses in the car and escaped after they were intercepted by forest officials.

According to Mahadevpur forest range officer (FRO) B Ramesh, they received a tip off on the movements of hunters at Palimela of Mahadevpur mandal and immediately alerted personnel at Mahadevpur check post.

At the check post, the forest personnel faced stiff resistance from the miscreants, who threatened the forest staff with guns and even attempted to run over them as they tried to stop the car in which the animals were being transported.

The forest personnel pursued the car till Ambatipalli village where the hunters left the car and fled in the cover of the darkness. Ramesh told presspersons that they have found bodies of two deer stuffed in boot space of the car, one male and a female, which was pregnant.

Sharp knives used for skinning the animals were also found in the car and it was said that there were five persons travelling in the car. One Aadhaar card bearing the name Faizal Mohammad Khan was found with Hyderabad address.

The car carrying the animals was also registered on the same name. A case under Wildlife Protection Act was booked and the local police were informed about the incident and investigation is going on, FRO Ramesh said.

The animals were shifted to Mahadevpur timber depot, where veterinary doctor Mallesham conducted post mortem on them. DFO T Ravi Kiran and other officials visited the spot.

However, the local sources revealed that there were nearly 10 men involved in the hunting of animals and they created a ruckus moving in three vehicles in the forests.

The forest personnel risking their lives chased and nabbed a few but they had to let the accused off coming under political pressure as a ruling party leader was one among the suspects. When asked the forest officials said none were let off.
