Hanamkonda: Department of Economic, Kakatiya University, on Tuesday organised a programme to mark the World Water Day celebrated on March 22.

The university Vice-Chancellor Prof R Sayanna after releasing the poster with the theme ‘Water for Life’ said that World Water Day is meant to take action on water issues. He said that the theme of the day for 2017 is ‘Why waste water?’ he said one should focus on reducing wastage of water.

The United Nations created this day to magnify the international focus on water related problems and to inspire people and organisations to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Every citizen must lend his and her role in conserving water, the VC said. B Suresh Lal, The head of Department Of Economics, said that globally over 80 per cent of wastewater is generated by society which flows back into the ecosystem without be¬ing treated or reused.

Nearly 1.8 billion people use contaminated drinking water, putting them at risk of contracting diseases like cholera, dysentery, typhoid and polio besides causing around 842,000 deaths each year. He said that the department of economics is organising campaigns at the town based schools, colleges and at the university by involving the participation of students and teachers on the importance of water.

At Mahabubabad, the town based social service organisation, Disha has also launched an awareness programme on preventing wasting of water on World Water Day. Disha founder G Gurunatha Rao had released publicity poster and pamphlets on Tuesday.
