Adilabad: Kothaguda in Utnoor is rather infamous for the addiction of the residents to illicit liquor (gudumba) resulting in the death of 100 persons, both young and old, during the last three years of liver and kidney ailments.
Among the victims were three brothers belonging to one family. It has no elder to take care of the other members. Consequently, women took up labour work to feed the members. Yet, they have no money to educate the children. These widows while speaking to The Hans India broke down stating that they have been facing varied hardships following the death of their husbands.
HIGHLIGHTS:
- Residents are addicted to illicit brew resulting in 100 deaths in three years due to liver and kidney ailments
- Each family in Kothaguda has a tragic story to tell
- Three brothers belonging to one family among the victims
With 150 families residing there, the village has become infamous as ‘gudumba factory’, which was once a source of livelihood of the people. The residents used to send the brew to other places for making money.
Each house in Kothaguda has a tragic story to tell, like the case of Lalita, who lost her husband one year after their marriage. She was left alone to fend for herself as the in-laws remained indifferent to her plight.
Speaking to The Hans India here on Thursday, she said that she has been forced to return to the parent’s house. The young widow has appealed to the State government to help her take up self-employment for sustenance.
Bhavani’s life is more tragic, as she lost her husband to the deadly illicit liquor. Without a house of her own, her life has become miserable. She too has been forced to take up work as a daily wage labourer to feed her children.
She wants the government or the district level officials to come to the rescue of her family and provide free education to her children. Such tragedy-hit families have expressed distress that no widow pension is being extended to them.
