Mancherial/Karimnagar: Five national Trade Unions (TUs) are to serve notices to the management of the Singareni Collieries on Friday indicating their intent to on an indefinite strike from April 17 demanding signing off fresh agreements with recognised TUs after holding discussions in the light of the AP High Court order on hereditary employment.

The TUs stated on Thursday that if no fresh agreements are signed they apprehend injustice would be done to 30,000 persons seeking hereditary jobs. If the management does not agree to the demand the TUs are getting ready for a strike by about 70,000 workers after 14 days, TU leader Bagha said. The strike will have a serious impact on coal production.

The TUs point out that the State government's decision to approach the apex court would not be of much help to the workers. Leaders of the unions have accused the government of deliberately delaying in providing hereditary jobs, stating that the court could not have struck down the agreements between the unions and the government signed in January 1981.

They want the government to find a solution to this problem and take steps to avert the strike. 'We don't want the government to adamantly approach the Supreme Court, but hold discussions with TUs for taking up hereditary employment', on which the five TUs have joined hands.

This issue is the topic of discussion everywhere in the Singareni Collieries. The TUs have been upset by the high court ruling. There is no clarity on the State approaching the apex court, although it has already stated that it would do so. It is said to be pondering over the impact of the strike which will cause a heavy loss to SCCL.

Although the management is said to be not giving much importance to the strike, the government is stated to be thinking on the lines of averting it, as there is pressure from the families of unemployed persons. Besides, already the SCCL contract staff is on strike because of which the management is facing a tough time. Now only 30,000 to 40.000 tonnes of coal is being produced. If all workers strike work the consequences to the management would surely serious.
