Hanamkonda: The State government was committed to developing infrastructure at all State universities and colleges, said Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE) Chairman Prof T Papi Reddy He said Rs 400 crore allocated to higher education in the recent State budget would help the universities and colleges improve infrastructure. Similarly the government has been making efforts to existing vacancies in higher education institutions in the State.

A committee has been established to study and suggest measures towards filling the vacancies of teaching and non-teaching staff in the State. The government was also mulling over increasing the superannuation age of university employees, he told presspersons in Hanamkonda on Friday.

With an objective of reducing the burden of running student messes in the State universities, the government has increased the scholarship of the students from Rs 900 to Rs 1,500 per month. The measure could ease burden on both the universities and the students, Prof Papi Reddy said.

Due to increase in the cost of mess maintenance, the burden used to fall on the students to pay the complete mess charges. The government has also directed the universities to waive off Rs 40 crore outstanding dues of students towards mess charges, he said.

Referring to the engineering colleges in the State, the TSCHE Chairmen informed that no permission would be given for setting up new engineering colleges in the State. Nearly 150 colleges in the State were already shut down due to lack of students.

To discuss the development of colleges in the State and to improve academic standards, a southern state-level conference was scheduled to be held in Hyderabad on Saturday, Prof Papi Reddy informed.

On the day, Prof Papi Reddy along with the Kakatiya University Registrar Prof MV Ranga Rao and former Vice-Chancellor Prof V Gopal Reddy felicitated senior faculty of zoology Prof M Krishna Reddy on the occasion of his superannuation.

The TSCHE Chairman lauded the services made by Prof Krishna Reddy towards development of the university and the department and described him as a good teacher and researcher worth emulating.
