Warangal: Scores of Congress workers and leaders staged agitations across the erstwhile Warangal district on Monday, demanding profitable price to chilli farmers.

A large number of party workers led by the district president N Rajender Reddy, have staged a dharna at Kazipet tahsildar office while the City Congress president K Srinivas Rao and its working president Rajanala Srihari staged protest at Warangal tahsildar office.

The leaders demanded the State government to come up with special package offering Rs 12,000 per quintal of chilli and procure the produce through Markfed. They wanted the district administration to hold a meeting with the concerned officials to see that the farmers offered much needed support.

Rajender Reddy urged the government to understand the distressing state of chilli farmers. If the government fails to act, the farmers would be compelled to commit suicides. The government which promised to create ‘Golden Telangana’ has been making farmers’ lives miserable.

He alleged that the government was only focusing on supporting contractors and projects like Mission Bhagiratha where it could earn commissions while neglecting the interests of the farming community.

The party leaders EV Srinivas Rao, Namindla Srinivas, B Judson, N Laxma Reddy, municipal councillors T Raju, J Rama, L Mounika, former market committee chairman M Vinod Kumar and others were present.

Addressing party workers at Warangal tahsildar office, City Congress working president Srihari demanded the State and Central governments to come to the rescue of chilli and red gram farmers. He wanted an offer price of Rs 8,000 per quintal for red gram and procured through Markfed.

It was sad that despite frequent protests by farmers, the Marketing Minister, T Harish Rao and Agriculture Minister P Srinivas Reddy have not visited Enumamula market and failed to address their issues.

With the steep fall in prices the farmers were not able to recover the labour charges. The failure of the government to waive off crop loans has also been troubling the farmers, he added.

DCC Bank Chairman J Raghva Reddy has led a similar protest at Palakurthy town where the party workers and farmers have burnt chilli as a mark of protest against the government’s negligent attitude.
