Nizamabad: Minister for Agriculture and Cooperatives Pocharam Srinivas Reddy said that the State government was initiating several measures for the upliftment of women and the weaker sections of the society.

Participating in the 190th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule at Vinayak nagar junction in the city on Tuesday, he said that the credit for educating women and emancipating them should go entirely to Jyotiba Phule, the eminent philosopher and great social reformer of the 19th century. Phule was the first to recognise the importance of education in uplifting and improving the living conditions of the poor and the downtrodden, including women, he added.

Minister Pocharam said that Phule fought against superstitions, social evils and social discrimination throughout his life. It was Phule who highlighted the concepts of equality and social justice through several books and pamphlets, Pocharam added. He said that the youth should take inspiration from Phule and look upon him as a role model.

Pocharam garlanded the statue of Jyotiba Phule and paid floral tributes. Later, participating in another meeting at the Ambedkar auditorium in the city in connection with Phule’s birth anniversary, the Agriculture Minister said that the government has increased the percentage of budgetary allocations for the backward classes, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes during this financial year and it has touched Rs 40,000 crore, he added.

He said that such a huge amount for the weaker sections was added only in the State of Telangana. He said that 100 per cent subsidy was provided on fishlings to the fishermen in the State. Now, every fisherman was able to earn Rs 1.50 lakh per annum by cultivating fish.

He said that the State government was implementing several developmental programmes to promote traditional and vocational industries in the district to prevent the weavers and others from migrating to other areas.

He said that the TRS government was also distributing three acres of land to the poor Dalits and also making them fertile and fit for cultivating crops. Review meetings would be held regularly on the status of the developmental programmes in Kamareddy and Nizamabad districts, he added.

The Minister said that the government was implementing many social welfare programmes for the welfare of women. He promised to sanction funds for the construction of a building for the backward classes in Nizamabad city.

MLC VJ Goud, District Collector Dr Yogitha Rana, Joint Collector A Ravinder Reddy, Mayor Akula Sujatha and others were present.
