Aswaraopet: In a shocking incident on Tuesday, the staff of the government community health centre here abandoned their efforts after a woman was halfway through her delivery once again exposing the negligent attitude of the personnel of the State-owned healthcare establishments.

Puchakayala Nagamani of Pakalagudem became a victim of the casual attitude of the health centre staff. With no ambulance available, she was brought to PHC in an auto-rickshaw by her mother and uncle. With no doctor on duty, ANM Manga took Nagamani to operation theatre after the latter developed labour pains. The ANM conducted tests, after which the head of infant tumbled out.

As the patient bled heavily and had low blood content, the staff advised Nagamani’s family to go to a private hospital. The relatives took her to a private hospital in the same condition. Even before doctors there began treatment, luckily, she delivered a baby boy through normal delivery.

After the shocking incident, speaking to The Hans India, local resident Satyanarayana alleged that both officials and representatives of the ruling party failed to take steps to contain such incidents. Meanwhile, Nagamani’s relatives, including her parents-in-law Muthamma and Seetaramudu, opined that such incidents would reoccur in future if government fails to take action against the staff.

Although such incidents involving poor Girijans had occurred in the health centre, the staff and the department continues to be unmoved. Patients told The Hans India that the staff’s negligent attitude was more apparent especially when they deal with Tribals.

Many patients seem to be apprehensive of approaching the health centre. They said that they are left to suffer in the absence of adequate health facilities that too in a constituency represented by a Minister, despite the availability of all modern equipment and qualified staff.
