Warangal: The political leaders and intellectuals here have seriously condemned the reported racist remarks made by former Rajya Sabha member Tarun Vijay of BJP against south Indians.

The remarks made by BJP leader reveal the party’s mindset towards the people of south. The party leadership must expel him from the party otherwise it would be assumed that leadership supports him, said City Congress working president Rajanala Srihari.

In a statement here on Tuesday, the Congress leader described Tarun Vijay’s comments as utterly idiotic and shows his immature mind despite the fact that he served as a parliamentarian. What the ex-MP spoke exposed the true colours of RSS and BJP and their outlook towards majority section of the country in the south, he stated.

It might be noted that Vijay during an interview to a foreign news channel reportedly said ‘If we were racist, why would we have entire South. We have black people around us…Tamil, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra…why do we live with them? We have black people around us’. He made the comments with reference to alleged racist attacks on African nationals in India.

Srihari demanded to know who the ‘we’ Tarun Vijay referred to whether it was RSS/BJP or the north Indians. Such divisive and racist statements were highly dangerous to the amicable existence of the people in the country and hence he should be punished severely.

“If the BJP leadership fails to control its leaders with loose tongue, it could lead to the downfall of the party in the country. Being a national party, it should respect all the people in the country whether dark skinned or fair skinned,” Srihari averred.

Speaking to The Hans India, retired associate professor of Kakatiya University K Damodar Rao felt that the BJP leader’s comments were ‘very shameless’. The comments clearly reveal the party leaders’ prejudice and their colonial attitude.

The BJP leadership often speaks about national integration and dubs itself as the champion of the cause. On the other hand, its leaders were making racist comments that divide people and such things were highly unwarranted, he noted.

The BJP leadership should try to prevent its leaders from making remarks that were detrimental to the unity and amity of the people in the country. Otherwise, persons like Tarun Vijay could harm the close knit existence of south and north, Damodar Rao warned.
