Kamareddy: It has become extremely difficult to work under the heat wave which hit the district. The State government has issued orders stating that labourers working under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) should work only from 6 am to 11 am and not beyond that, in order to protect themselves from the Sun stroke as the mercury levels are moving up fast.

It may be recalled that an MGNREGA labourer and a field assistant lost their lives because of sun stroke recently. The registered maximum temperature so far is 41 degrees Celsius. While the heat is causing inconvenience to the common people, it can be imagined the hardships faced by labourers working directly under the blazing Sun. Only 80,000 of the 2.13 lakh labourers in the district are going to work.

The State government used to employ a person to supply drinking water to the labourers. Presently, it is paying Rs 5 per labourer to get his/her own water. With the new rule, each labourer is bringing 1-2 litres of water while they have to drink at least 6 litres to protect themselves from dehydration.

The need of the hour is to create awareness regarding the symptoms of sun-stroke. They should be advised to carry Oral Rehydration Solutions with them. They should also be advised on how to provide first aid to a person who became victim to sun stroke. The labourers should wear caps or turbans to their heads.

Speaking to The Hans India here on Wednesday, DRDA Project Director Chandramohan Reddy said that he directed the labourers to be careful while working under the hot weather. He said that pamphlets were being distributed to labourers regarding the precautions that they have to take to beat the heat. As many as 16,000 tents have been arranged for the labourers, he added.
