Karimnagar: Former MP and TPCC vice-president Ponnam Prabhakar sought the intervention of Minister of State for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare Parshottam Rupala to come to the rescue of the farmers, especially red chilli growers in Telangana.

In a letter to the Minister on Thursday, he pointed out the problems faced by the chilli farmers. The price of red chilli fallen to 60 to 70 per cent, he said, referring to the market yard price of Rs 4,000 to Rs 5,000 per quintal.

The TRS government remained mute spectator on the issue, hence the Centre should intervene immediately and provide at least Rs 10,000 per quintal so that farmers could meet the cultivation expenses, Prabhakar urged the Union Minister.

He also urged the Central government to offer succour to the distressed farmers, who lost their paddy crop in rabi due to lack of water. He said that groundwater level in majority places of the State have fallen to 20 to 25 mtrs depth.

As a result, majority of irrigation wells and borewells were dried up, he said. The former MP also urged the Centre to provide special subsidy on seed in addition to the State government’s aid so that it would be helpful to the farmers in the coming Kharif season.
