Asks the govt to first address the issues of chilli farmers

Khammam: Communist Party of India (CPI) leaders staged a dharna at the Agriculture Market Yard Committee office here on Monday, in protest against the government for not addressing the issues of chilli farmers.

The CPI cadre led by State joint secretary Kunamneni Sambasiva Rao and district secretary Bagam Hemanth Rao visited the market yard and tried to elicit information about the problems of chilli growers.

Speaking to media, Kunamneni criticised the government for not taking measures to protect the interests of the farmers who have been struggling to get even the input costs.

He questioned the rationale behind the State government’s promise to provide Rs 4,000 per acre for fertilisers next year when the farmers were in dire straits this season without remunerative price to their produces such as chilli and red gram.

Kunamneni demanded the government to purchase the chillis by providing Rs 15,000 per quintal. “The CPI is ready to launch agitations if the government fails to address the issues of farmers,” he threatened. Senior leaders of the party took part in the dharna.
