Illegal sand mining continues unabated on Manjira River bank
Sand quarrying is going on at a rapid pace on the banks of River Manjira on the outskirts of the Salura village at Bodhan Mandal in the district with sand mining started by the Maharashtra government.
Nizamabad: Sand quarrying is going on at a rapid pace on the banks of River Manjira on the outskirts of the Salura village at Bodhan Mandal in the district with sand mining started by the Maharashtra government.
A large number of lorries have arrived on the river banks to upload the large quantities of sand and transport it to other places. Salura village is situated on the borders of TElangana and Maharashtra states. A large fleet of lorries are seen daily at the inter-State check- post at Salura as quarrying has started in Maharashtra.
However what is disturbing is the fact that Maharsthra government is carrying on sand quarrying at a brisk pace even in the villages of Husna, Madarna and Khajapur villages in the State of Telangana which is illegal.
The contractors have thrown all the rules and regulations to the winds and going ahead with the quarrying. As a result, it h led to conflicts between the people in the villages of Telangana region and those in Maharashtra.
Moreover, the sand mafia is looting the sand on the side of the Manjira in Telangana villages secretly during the night and this has become common phenomenon.
Ever since the Telangana State government cancelled the tenders called for sand mining, it is alleged that some of the people in Telangana living in Maharasthra have connived with the sand contractors in Maharashtra and continuing with it illegally. As a result, the Telangana State exchequer is incurring losses running into crores of Rupees.
What is surprising is the fact that the officials concerned have not demarcated any borders on the banks of River Manjira between Telangana and Maharasthra States. The borders that were demarcated 60 years ago are still being followed.
There are allegations that the police at the check-post are indifferent to the large scale smuggling. Speaking to The Hans India here on Friday, some of the locals at the banks of River Manjira alleged that officials concerned were turning a blind eye to the large scale smuggling of sand and lamented that they were not at all bothered to put an end to it.
If anybody tries to put an end to the illegal quarrying, they were being physically attacked. A strict vigil should be maintained on the borders, they added. They expressed the hope that the State government would do something to put an end to this racket.
