Hanamkonda: Former chief whip G Venkata Ramana Reddy held the TRS government responsible for the farmers’ suicides and demanded criminal cases booked against the Chief Minister, K Chandrashekar Rao, concerned ministers and officials.

He said the Chief Minister should be held as A-1 accused followed by Agriculture Minister P Srinivas Reddy as A-2, Marketing Minister T Harish Rao as A-3 and agriculture officials as A-4 for the death of chilli and other farmers in the State.

Speaking to presspersons in Hanamkonda on Monday, he said the Congress party would go to Human Rights Commission and knock the doors of the court over the negligent attitude of the government towards farmers.

The CM spoke about lot of things at the recent TRS public meeting in the city but failed to come out with any solution to chilli farmers’ crisis. The CM should immediately go to New Delhi and speak to the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi to address the issue.

The situation would not have been this worse if Markfed counters were set up at agriculture markets. Marketing Minister Harish Rao, who was known to be trouble shooter, should visit Enumamula market on Tuesday and make use of his skills to help the chilli farmers, the Congress leader demanded.

Deputy Chief Minister K Srihari, the senior member in the State cabinet too has failed to help the farmers. The CM should convene a meeting with agriculture officials and allocate Rs 1,000 crore budget to address the crisis, he demanded.

‘The CM should also ask the Central ministers to visit the State to take stock of the situation. This is his credibility issue, his credibility levels have been falling down because of his poor handling of the situation,’ he noted.

Ramana Reddy wanted the State government to offer bonus to chilli and other farmers like the Karnataka government was offering to the farmers. The Congress government in that State was giving Rs 200 to Rs 500 bonus to farmers, but the Telangana government has not taken any measure.

Finding fault with booking cases against farmers and Opposition MLA for protesting at Khammam market, he said the government, instead of addressing the issue, was punishing them. As the ruling party leaders failed to visit the markets, the Opposition leaders are visiting the markets at the request of farmers.

In order to prevent protests by farmers, the markets were being closed without any reason and restrictions were being imposed on farmers’ movements at the markets. The move by the government was further aggravating the situation, Ramana Reddy noted.
