Jangaon: District Collector A Devasena has proposed to conduct ‘Child marriages prevention week’ soon by involving all government departments concerned and stakeholders.

She suggested forming an ‘Adolescent Girls Association’ in each school under the supervision of a female teacher to prevent child-marriages. There should be a proper method to spread information whenever a minor girl gets married so that the marriage could be prevented.

The Collector along with Commissioner of Police G Sudheer Babu has attended awareness proggramme on ‘Prohibition of Child Marriages Act and Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act-2002’ organised by ICDS at Jangaon on Thursday.

Speaking on the occasion, Devasena felt that one should act with a matured mind to educate the masses. The officials concerned have to associate with the masses in the villages in an effective manner so as to build a trust in between them.

It on the other hand helps to achieve better results to prevent child marriages. The officials should regularly visit the schools they adopted and interact with students. One could learn lot of things about the life of the children, when they stay overnight at the hostels, she added.

The Collector lauded the cooperation being extended by the police in preventing child marriages and suggested dos’ and don’ts to scribes while covering any incident of child marriage.

The Commissioner of Police, Sudheer Babu, said that at a time when the women are progressing in all the fields it was the duty of all the concerned to end the menace of child marriages. He said worldwide 47 per cent of marriages were child marriages and majority of them taking place in India.

It was because, the parents often think that a girl as a financial burden on them. Another reason that compels parents to get their minor girls married off was that they feel there was lack of security to the girls. He stressed on the need of effective implementation of legislations meant for girls and women’s welfare.
