Hanamkonda: The Central government’s announcement to provide Rs 5,000 a quintal support price to chilli is nowhere near what the farmers wanted, Telugu Desam Party State general secretary Sitakka said, demanding at least Rs 8,000 a quintal in addition to another Rs 2,000 as transportation.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, she said that the State has always escaped from its responsibility in providing support price to chilli this season. “If the State can allocate at least 1 per cent of its annual budget, the farm crisis would have addressed,” she said, accusing the TRS government of being insensitive towards farmers’ plight.

Never before in the past, market yard authorities conducted business in the shadow of police, she said, terming it as the failure of the government. Though it was the responsibility of the government to stabilise the prices through market intervention funds, the Chief Minister, K Chandrashekar Rao, has not focused on it, she alleged.

She demanded the government provide support price announced by the Centre to all the farmers since the start of the season. She also demanded the government withdraw the cases booked against Sathupally MLA Sandra Venkata Veeraiah and 10 farmers in connection with the ransacking of Khammam market yard.

State general secretary Eega Mallesham said that KCR deserves Amrutabhishekam as he didn’t respond to the TDP’s Open Letter released ahead of the TRS’ public meeting in Warangal on April 27.

The TDP leaders visited market yards and interacted with the farmers and exposed the TRS government’s failures, however, there was no response from Minister for Agriculture Pocharam Srinivas Reddy and Minister for Irrigation and Marketing T Harish Rao, he said.

He found fault with the Congress for claiming credit for the Centre’s announcement to provide support price for chilli farmers.Gandra Satyanarayana Rao, Sd Manjoor Hussain, Kondam Madhusudan Reddy, Thallapally Jayapal and Pullur Ashok Kumar were among others present.
