Warangal: Demanding the government a minimum support price (msp) of Rs 10,000 per quintal for chillies and Rs 8,000 per quintal for turmeric, the leaders of Communist Party of India – Marxist (CPM), Warangal rural district staged a dharna at the Collectorate in Warangal on Monday.

They also demanded to stop police action against farmers. Speaking on the occasion, CPM Warangal rural district secretary M Chukkaiah demanded that the government should purchase the produce immediately to save the distressed farmers.

Otherwise, he warned, of intensifying agitation to teach both the State and Central governments a fitting lesson. He alleged that the government was not fixing msp for the farmers’ produce but purchasing the same from traders and middlemen for more price.

The traders are processing the yield and selling the same to the government for a price 10 times more than the price they gave to the farmers. The government is even giving subsidies to them, he criticised.

The farmers, who worked hard investing huge amounts on their crops, were depressed for not getting even minimum price for their produce and were taking extreme step of ending their lives while the traders and middlemen have been earning crores of rupees with the government’s support, he pointed out.

The State and Central governments, by throwing mud on each other, were trying to cheat the poor farmers and both BJP and TRS leaders were playing cheap politics to get political mileage, he added.

CPM Warangal rural district unit leaders Ch Rangaiah, Peddarapu Ramesh, Gone Yuvaraj, Bhukya Sammaiah, Koraboina Kumaraswamy, Nakka Chiranjeevi, Kadiyala Veerachary, Challa Narasimha Reddy, Akula Rudra Prasad, Chelpur Mogili, O Mallaiah, H Sanjeev and R Ramesh were present in the dharna along with others.
