Kothagudem: Five national coal miners’ trade unions, including the Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC), on Tuesday called its workers in coal mines across the country to join the protest on June 19, 20 and 21 against the merger of the Coal Mines Provident Fund Organisation (CMPF) with the Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPF).

The other demands of the trade unions include enhancing the pension for the coal miners, better wage agreement and increase in wages of contract workers and so on.

Speaking at a meeting held here, the CITU-affiliated Singareni Collieries Employees’ Union state general secretary N Narasimha Rao said the discussions on merger of CMPF with the EPF made no headway during the discussions held at standardisation meeting on May 4, and at the JBCCI meeting held subsequently on May 8 and 9.

Opposing the decision of the coal units’ managements on the merger, the national trade unions called for strike for three days in coal mines across the country. However, the some other trade unions opposed the strike call.
