Jagtial: The government has been introducing various welfare schemes in the State to uplift the weaker sections living in villages and ‘Sheep Scheme’ is one among them, said District Collector Dr A Sharath.

He participated in the Gram Sabha held at Nagaram village in Dharmapuri mandal on Wednesday to select the beneficiaries for the scheme.

Speaking on the occasion, the Collector said presently meat has been imported from other states to meet the demand. Hence to increase meat production in the State and to uplift the shepherd community, the government has introduced this scheme.

As part of the scheme, one unit, which consists of 20 sheep and one ram worth Rs 1.25 lakh, will be allotted either to a shepherd family or to a person of shepherd community, who completed 18 years.

Of this amount, the government will give subsidy of Rs 93,750 and the beneficiary must pay the remaining amount of Rs 31,250 to the government, informed the Collector.

Half of the eligible beneficiaries would be picked up through lottery system and would be allotted one unit this year and the remaining members would be allotted next year.

Twenty three of the total 46 applicants in Nagaram were given one unit this year. The remaining 23 persons will get the unit next year, the Collector said.
