Most genres in cinema have a limited scope -- Revenge, comedy, romance, and realistic cinema. Those, who repeatedly, delve in these genres as writers or directors will tell you how difficult it is to deliver quality and refreshing cinema time and again. The narrowest of them, in fact, is horror.
The trailer of the upcoming flick ‘Dobaara’ has already garnered over five million views on YouTube. The trailer seems scary and we can say that the film will surely send chills down the spine of the audience
Therefore a horror movie director might have made 40 horror movies, if he has made even four, which stand out then we should hold him in high regard. Ram Gopal Varma (RGV) and Vikram Bhatt have kept the horror flag high for Bollywood with some good work.
Sure the purists scoff at them but movies like ‘Raaz’, ‘Bhoot’, ‘Raat’ and ‘1920’ in particular are some of our underrated horror gems. In fact, the horror genre has suffered in India, in the recent years largely because both RGV and Vikram Bhatt went out of form.
But like a scary situation striking right when you least expect it in a good horror movie. We the horror movie buffs have been hit by the trailer of ‘Dobaara’.
With possibly the weakest promotion behind it -- a simple testimony to the fact is that despite being a big horror movie buff I missed the trailer release till another horror movie fan friend sent a link.
Despite such low key market push and all the attention going to the flavour of the season called ‘Baahubali’. ‘Dobaara's trailer has struck a chord and hit more than five million views on YouTube.
This means that horror genre has the scope and only the makers have been failing to tap it. We love the supernatural how much ever politically correct statements we make about not believing in ghosts. The fact is souls moving around for unfulfilled wishes fascinate us.
‘Dobaara’ promises a good concept in its trailer. A man is controlled by a spooky mirror, which brings out the evil dark side in it. And years later a daughter and a reluctant son come together to clear their father's name. This is a brilliant plot point.
We just love tales of justice delivered and we love horror. The director combines both in the trailer. If you remember RGV's last horror classic called ‘Bhoot’, it was actually a story of revenge packaged brilliantly with the icing of horror.
‘Dobaara's trailer gives us a glimpse of the horror and makes you scared enough without showing a single scary face in the whole trailer. That makes you realise and hope that for a change the director is trying to treat this story in a different manner.
The star cast is a bunch of talented performers. Huma Qureshi has a screen presence so does Adil Husain - who is fast emerging as one of our better-controlled energy actors. Don't really recall when this man went overboard even while doing loud scenes. Adil Hussain for sure will make a great choice for a wronged and a possessed man.
Like a good trailer should be, we are given some intriguing plot points. Like the mirror knows how to defend itself as claimed by Natasha, the daughter. This could actually be the make or break point of this movie. It does make you give it a try for sure.
It might turn out that the mirror protects in the most mundane horror movie tricks but it makes one curious enough as a viewer. The second part, of course, is how does a mirror control your psyche to turn good human beings into evil?
The fact is that most of our horror makers don't explore such questions in their genre in depth. In the end, it all ends with some “Tantrik baba” with a “pavitra paththar” solving it for all of us. We hope that the director of this one as builds the whole movie as interesting as the trailer.
If you are a sincere Indian horror genre buff ‘Dobaraa’ looks like a promising movie after series of disappointments in the horror genre. Awaiting for goosebumps “dobaara”!
