Warangal: To increase green cover in the region using seed ball method, Warangal Rural district administration started preparatory work at Singarajupally under Damera mandal on Tuesday.
Collector Prashanth Jeevan Patil, along with Conservator of Forests MJ Akbar and Parkal MLA Challa Dharma Reddy, organised an awareness programme about the importance of seed ball, also known as seed bombing technology in increasing green belt.
Patil said that the administration was planning to prepare five lakh seed balls as part of Haritha Haram and throw them in denuded hillocks and forest area. It may be noted here that seed balls is made of clay, compost and water ensuring seed in the centre.
The dried up balls will be thrown into targeted barren and hilly land ahead of monsoon. When it rains, the balls open up and seed starts germinating. With the Collector himself sitting alongside, about 325 villagers including 250 women, who participated in the programme, prepared 1.08 lakh seed balls.
Thanking the villagers, he expressed confidence that in next five years the region will boast a lot of greenery.
MLA Dharma Reddy appealed to people to extend their support to the State government’s ambitious programme Haritha Haram. The State would receive abundant rains with the reforestation programme. This apart, monkeys that are invading villages due to decrease in forest cover will also go back to their natural habitats, he said.
Conservator of Forests MJ Akbar said that reforestation is the only solution to control pollution levels, and to maintain ecological balance. Joint Collector M Haritha said that onus is on everyone to protect the saplings planted through Haritha Haram. DFO K Purushotham, Sarpanch Lakshmi, Vana Sena representative Veerabhadra Rao were among others present.
