Kothagudem: District Rural Development Agency Project Director P Jagath Kumar Reddy informed that they have verified and finalised 4,742 applications for the financial support for single women scheme. The due date for receiving the applications has closed on May 21, he said, adding that they were waiting for approval from the district collector.

The district received a total of 5,221 applications. While 4,274 applications were from rural areas, 811 were from urban and 688 from the municipality. Of this, 136 applications were submitted manually. While the set deadline was over, there were many people who have not applied for the scheme.

Lack of awareness seems to be reason behind this. Of the 5,221 applications received, 431 applications were received from Dummugudem mandal, followed by 373 from Dammapet. As the days were scorching in May, a lot of people did not come out of their houses and some even had lacked the idea about the scheme. Hence, only a few applications were received in the district.

Mahila Sangham leader M Renuka speaking to The Hans India, said though the scheme introduced by the government would highly beneficial for the single women, the given for applying was not adequate and proper. While the process started on May 8 and closed by May 21, the 15-day period without any awareness campaign was not sufficient, she felt.

As per the scheme, the beneficiaries must attach income certificates and other documents which aren’t possible for them to secure so fast. She appealed to the government to extend the date of the scheme and help single women. The officers did not hold any awareness camps in the villages about the scheme, she added.

As per the guidelines issued by the Telangana government, the beneficiary’s annual income should not exceed Rs 1.5 lakh in rural areas and Rs 2 lakh in urban areas.

The beneficiary should not be covered under any other social security pension scheme. Under this scheme, the beneficiaries will get Rs 1,000 each per month. Married woman above 18 years of age who had been separated from her husband or whose husband deserted her for more than one year would be eligible for the financial assistance.

Unmarried women aged above 30 years in rural areas and above 35 years in urban areas would also be eligible for the financial assistance.
