​Warangal: The District Medical and Health Officer Dr B Harish Raj has appealed the NGOs and media to play an active role in curbing the consumption of tobacco in the society.

He said in India due to tobacco use daily 2,200 persons are dying and in a year 10 lakh deaths were taking place. Hence non-government agencies and media agencies should augment government efforts to educate public about the dangers of tobacco use.

He addressed a meeting at IMA hall in Warangal on Wednesday marking World No Tobacco Day. The meeting was organised by the district medical and family welfare department in association with Lions Club of Orugallu, Ramaka Foundation, NSS, IMA, Karunamaithri Positive Network and others.

Dr Harish Raj informed that soon a Tobacco Control Committee would be set up with the District Collector as the chairperson. An action plan to reduce use of tobacco would be drawn involving police, revenue and commercial tax.

Noted cardiologist Dr R Srinivas, KMC Principal Dr V Chandrashekar and others have stressed on the need of effective implementation of Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act , 2003, (COTPA).

Dr Srinivas said tobacco contains 4,000 types of chemicals that cause different kinds of cancers, heart ailments and diabetes. Dr Chandrashekar informed that steps would soon be taken to establish a dedicated cell to treat the patients affected by tobacco use.

Deputy DM&HO K Lalitha Kumari, IMA district president Anand Bhokrey, district mass media officer V Ashok Reddy and others were present.
