Nizamabad: A festive atmosphere is prevailing in the surrounding areas of the Sriram Sagar Project and on the adjacent banks of River Godavari with the arrival of Siberian cranes in large numbers.

Generally, these flamingo birds migrate from Siberia and Yugoslavia unable to withstand the extremely cold conditions during winter in those countries. They migrate to warmer regions.

They create a lot of flutter during the early morning and evening hours. They are attracting large number of tourists. The weather conditions prevailing here are favourable to the birds for laying eggs.

Recently, one of these birds died and the fishermen brought it to the notice of officials of the Forest Department. Basing on the spots found on their wings, the officials are trying to identify the country from which these birds came from. They are also collecting their photos.

Speaking to The Hans India here on Wednesday, one of the fishermen Rajaiah said that such birds used to come here four years ago. Hundreds of such birds from foreign countries used to come here near the Gutsa, Ali Agar and Hanmanth Reddy Lift Irrigation Schemes and go back.

However, due to the scanty rainfall as and as no water was available in the Sriram Project reservoir, they did not come here for the last three years. But now with the bountiful rainfall the region received last year, they started coming here again in large numbers.
