Jangaon: The district administration has planned to plant one crore saplings during the ensuing Haritha Haram to spread green cover across the district.

The District Collector, A Devasena, on Thursday launched Haritha Haram programme by planting sapling of a peepal tree (Sacred fig-Ficus religiosa) by the roadside on the outskirts of the town.

Speaking to press persons on the occasion, she said a comprehensive plan of action has been chalked out for the effective implementation of Haritha Haram. It was planned to plant saplings on either side of roads that connects the town with other places.

Similarly work related to preparation of one crore seed balls was going on at brisk pace. The seed balls would be deposited on in hillocks, rocky mounds and podu lands. This year the preparation and depositing of seed balls has been taken up on an experimental basis, the Collector said hoping that it would be successful in raising green cover in the district.

The district having arid conditions needs huge extent of green cover to ensure good rainfall. The public should also involve themselves actively in planting saplings and to protect them afterwards, Devasena said.

On the day, a training programme on making seed balls was held at forest department nursery at the town for gram panchayat and the district rural development department employees. Forest range officer Srinivasa Raju conducted the training.
