Nalgonda: A pall of gloom descended on Munugode Assembly constituency and erstwhile Nalgonda district after news of death of senior congress leader and MP Palvai Govardhan Reddy at Kulu of Himachal Pradesh on Friday.

Palvai, one of the senior-most Congress leaders in Telanagana, was elected as MLA from Munugode for five times. He was well-known as a hard core Congress loyalist and was closely associated with Former Prime Minister late Jawaharlal Nehru’s family.

Palvai also closely worked with five generations of Nehru family including Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

In 2012, many Congress leaders competed for Rajya Sabha seat. However, with the blessings of Sonia Gandhi he got the chance to contest. Even though state Congress had several groups, but Palvai was familiar as man of party high command.

During the formation of Telangana, Palvai played a key role and stressed the high command from time to time about the importance of carving out separate Telangana state.

He had differences with Congress leaders Komatireddy brothers. In 2014 elections, he mounted pressure on high command for allocation of Munugode MLA ticket to his daughter Palvai Sravanthi.

But as part of alliance, high command allocated ticket to CPI. Palvai Sravathi contested as an independent candidate and lost the election.

He got criticism from own party leaders due to daughter’s political move in 2014 elections. He strongly opposed the construction of Polavaram project.

Followers of Palvai, Vittal Reddy and Vishnuwardhan Reddy expressed grief over the demise of their political mentor. They stated that Palvai was a very honest politician and hoisted the flag of Congress putting end to CPI domination in Munugode constituency.

They further informed that he used to take care of party workers as his family members and lost about 100 acres of land in politics for the welfare of party and supporters. In his tenure, Munugode developed on all fronts.

Another follower, Satyam, described him as a man of ethics and role model to other oliticians. Telanganan Pradesh Congress Committee president Uttam Kumar Reddy, CLP leader Jana Reddy, Deputy CLP leader Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, MLC Rajgopal Reddy, DCC president Budida Bikshamaiah Goud, Former MLA Chirumarthi Lingaiah, Minister Jagadish Reddy, MPs Gutha Sukender Reddy, Boora Narsaiah Goud expressed their grief and deep condolence to family members of Palvai.

Congress leaders said his death was a great loss to party in the state. According to Palvai supporters, his cremation would be performed at his native place Idikuda of Chandur mandal in Nalgonda district on Saturday evening.
