​Hanamkonda: The Chief Minister, K Chandrashekar Rao, has been making committed efforts towards shaping Telangana as a welfare State, noted Warangal West MLA D Vinay Bhasker.
As part of this, the State government has been giving Aasara pensions to nearly 3.7 lakh beedi workers and now the pension scheme was being extended to an estimated 80,000 more workers in view of the revised guidelines in selecting the beneficiaries, he said.
The MLA presided over a programme organised by District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) to distribute letters of sanction to the newly identified beneficiaries. He said Telangana has been emerging as the best State in the country in terms of welfare schemes.
He asked the officials to clear pending applications and sanction pensions to eligible applicants. Beedi workers were among helpless sections, where women work hard but get less returns and often affected by diseases. That was why the TRS government wanted to help them.
GWMC Mayor N Narender addressing the gathering said the State government has been implementing innovative welfare schemes for the benefit of the sections in the society. In order to help more beedi workers, the guidelines to select the beneficiaries were revised.
Aasara pension scheme has helped poor and helpless women and the beedi workers financially. In Warangal city, large number of families is dependent on beedi making to earn livelihood, the pensions would supplement what they earn by their work, the Mayor noted.
The CM, KCR, who was concerned about the beedi workers’ poor state, decided to ensure pensions to them and issuing pensions since 2015. The initiatives by the Telangana government have been attracting nations’ attention, said ZP Chairperson G Padma.
In Warangal district, as many as 6,607 beedi workers were getting pensions. With the new guidelines, 388 beneficiaries were identified and sanctioned pensions, said District Collector Amrapali Kata.
MP P Dayakar, MLA T Rajaiah, KUDA chairman M Yadava Reddy and DRDA officials were present during the programme.
