Warangal: The leaders of city Congress, BSP and large numbers of residents of Jagjivan Ram Colony staged a demonstration at Warangal Tahsildar’s office on Thursday.

They demanded the immediate rehabilitation to the residents of the colony which was razed by the Revenue Department officials on Wednesday on the pretext that the houses were on SRSP lands. The protest was led by city Congress president Rajanala Srihari and BSP leader Birru Ravi.

In a memorandum submitted to the Tahsildar B Rajesh, they wanted the officials to act on humanitarian grounds and provide alternate shelter to those who lost their houses in the demolition drive.

It was grave injustice that the residents were not allowed to pick up their food grains and other provisions before pulling down their homes, they added. Many of the residents were aged and their families have little children.

As the residents could not get houses on rent right away, the government should ensure shelter, food and water to them. They should be accommodated in a function hall or any such place for the time being, Srihari said.

Hundreds of residents who took part in the demonstration poured out their grievances to Tahsildar Rajesh who assured them that he would take up their issue with the higher authorities.
