SCCL strike enters fifth day

Kothagudem: Several union leaders and workers of Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) were arrested on the fifth day of their indefinite strike on Monday. Scores of workers have been arrested and later released on personal bond.

When the police tried to arrest the peacefully agitating activists of the JAC of the national trade unions in front of the SCCL headquarters here, trade union leaders questioned the rationale behind the arrests.

The arrested broke loose and came out of the police van and tried to stage a rastaroko in the labourer-dominant area of Fourth Incline. However, the police foiled their attempts and lodged them in Annapureddypalli mandal police station.

The arrested raised slogans demanding implementation of dependent jobs, in favour of the indefinite strike and against the Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and the police.

Earlier while staging a dharna in front of the SCCL headquarters here, the trade union leaders, including Annavarapu Satyanarayana and Manda Narasimha Rao, blamed the SCCL management for instigating workers to go on strike on jobs under dependent quota.

The TRS government and the SCCL management took away with the left hand what was given with the right hand, they said.

They sought to know why the management was neglecting the workers, who were sacrificing their health for the sake of the company, going back on filling jobs under dependent quota.

“The TRS government invented alternatives to court verdicts on several issues,” they pointed out, but failed to have a clear perspective on dependent jobs.

The credit of driving the workers to go on strike goes to the SCCL management and the TRS government, they said. The state government set a rare record for declaring play day to the SCCL headquarters irrespective of the production, they said.

On the merger of CMPF with the EPF, the Centre budged but the State government was still exhibiting an adamant attitude on dependent jobs, they felt.

They said it was high time the State government responded positively on the dependent jobs and took right decision to end the strike by giving up its dictatorial style of functioning.

Otherwise, they threatened to intensify the strike and pointed out that the government would have to be held responsible if anything went wrong. Several CPI and CPM leaders also took part in the dharna.
