​Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), with the help of Self Help Groups (SHGs), is planning to provide LED lights to 25 lakh households, through which a lot of energy can be saved, thus reducing monthly power bills to the extent of 50 per cent.

In a press note issued here on Monday, the GHMC claimed that this was one-of-its-kind in the entire country and it was the only municipal corporation which was taking up this innovative project for the convenience of citizens.

The main aim of the project is to provide at least four LED bulbs, tube lights, five star rated fans with subsidy rates, duly involving the SHG women for the purpose.

With the LED lights, nearly 50 per cent of power bills can be reduced with more effective brighter lighting system. The GHMC and Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) has already started opening counters in all circle offices and the head office two months ago, which received very good response from the citizens.

The present sale in circles and head office is estimated at only 4.20 lakh LED bulbs. For strengthening the project, the GHMC is planning to involve the listed 4.5 lakh SHG women, by which a single SHG woman will be benefited Rs 10 for an LED light, Rs 12 for tube lights and Rs 102 for fans, as commission to them.

In this connection, EESL will be conducting a meeting with town level federations for the said project, where the GHMC Commissioner will also be coordinating to take up the project soon. The EESL will hand over the materials to the TLF that will involve SHG women to complete the process of sale etc within 15 days. The Mayor will inaugurate the scheme on June 21.
