Nalgonda: Horticulture Commissioner Venkatram Reddy said the weather conditions in Telangana were suitable for cultivating dates.

On Wednesday after visiting a dates garden of farmer Agamaiah of Narsingbatla, he informed that Department of Horticulture would like to increase date farming in 100 acres in Nalgonda, Mahbubnagar, Medak, Siddipet and Sangareddy on pilot basis, and after getting good results it would encourage the date farming in rest of the districts.

As part of the pilot project, 60 date saplings would be supplied per acre with 75 per cent subsidy and government would take responsibility of maintenance for a period of three years, he informed.

Stating that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao was taking all measures to make agriculture a profitable sector in the state, he advised farmers to give up cultivating regular crops and opt for profitable ones to gain good dividends.

He appreciated Agamaiah for cultivating dates and informed that Nalgonda was ahead of other districts in cultivating vegetables. Official of Horticulture department Sangeetha Laxmi and others participated in the programme.
