Warangal: The Chief Minister, K Chandrasekhar Rao, surrendered to the blackmail tactics of the BJP in supporting the NDA’s Presidential candidate, Ram Nath Kovind, alleged senior Congress leader Rajanala Srihari.
The CM was worried over large scale corruption he had committed when he was the union labour minister and feared that BJP might expose his acts. His surrender to BJP was meant to keep under wraps his acts of corruption, he said.
He attended a mock polling conducted by Rajanala Yuva Sena in Warangal on Friday to learn the public mood on the choice for the Presidents’ office. Of the 1000 ballots polled, UPA nominee Meira Kumar got 756 votes and NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind got 233 while 11 were invalid.
Speaking to presspersons on the occasion, Srihari, the city Congress working president, said “If the CM, Chandrashekar Rao, is a real Telangana man he should support the candidature of Meira Kumar for her contribution to Telangana statehood cause”.
Meira Kumar, when she was the Lok Sabha speaker, ensured the passage of Telangana bill in the house, by taking some unprecedented steps like closing the doors of Parliament and TV shows. Now the CM has got a chance to express his gratitude to Meira Kumar for acting in favour of separate Telangana, he felt.
It was not proper for the TRS leadership to support Kovind for the office of the President of India as he got RSS background and narrow religious considerations, he said while referring to Kovind’s opposition to reservations to Muslims and other religious minorities.
Meira Kumar, as the daughter of Babu Jagjivan Ram, has got broad secular ideas and was suitable for the post. The TRS legislators should go by their conscience in the Presidential elections and support her, Srihari added.
The CM should withdraw his backing to Kovind and direct his party legislators to vote in favour of Meira Kumar, he demanded. Otherwise, Congress would organise massive protests exposing his double standards to the people in the State for backing religious fundamentalist.
The party spokesperson Ch Venkateshwaralu, former market committee chairman M Vinod Kumar, minority cell city president Mohammed Ayub and others were present.
