Bhupalpalli: The district administration is mulling over to limit the jaggery offerings by devotees attending the ensuing Medaram Jatara to one kilo per person. It may be noted that the jaggery, which the devotees call ‘Bangaram’, is the main offering at the jatara. The devotees perform ‘Thulabharam’ wherein they offer jaggery equal to their weight to the deities.

Due to Thulabharam offerings, huge quantities of jaggery has been accumulating. In order to address the issue, the administration is intending to hold talks with Sammakka Saralamma priests to put a limit on jaggery offering, the District Collector A Murali said.

The Collector has on Tuesday held a meeting with district officials to review arrangements for the biennial Jatara to be conducted for four days from January 31 to February 3, 2018. The State government is ready to sanction Rs 100 crore for the conduct of the historic and largest tribal Jatara in Asia.

It is estimated that nearly 1.20 crore devotees will take part in the Jatara. Technical approvals for the execution of works identified have to be obtained by July 20. The works tenders must be invited before the first week of August and works should be started at the earliest, Murali suggested.

He directed the R&B and Panchayat Raj, Engineering departments officials to carry out road repairs, widening of roads, and construction of culverts, Kalyanakatta, toilets, installing battery of taps and strengthening of queue line barricades.

He advised the farmers at Medaram village to take up short term crops, which give yield within three months so that the crops might not be damaged due to works related to the Jatara arrangements.
