Khammam: Haritha Haram is not meant only for planting saplings but to protect them until they grow into trees, felt Roads and Buildings Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao here in Khammam on Friday.

The Minister along with District Collector D S Lokesh Kumar, Commissioner of Police Tafseer Iqbal and Forest Conservator D Narasaiah, chaired a review meeting on the implementation of third phase of Haritha Haram here at Technical Training and Development Centre (TTDC) here in Khammam on Friday.

Speaking at the meeting, the R&B Minister said the officials of various departments must coordinate with each other to successfully implement the set target of planting of 95 lakh saplings under third phase of the programme in the district.

The members of Haritha Committees, people’s representatives, government officials, students and the representatives of voluntary organisations must participate actively in large numbers in the programme, which would start from July 12, in Velugumatla village.

“Identify the places without creating disturbances to the works that are carrying out under Mission Bhagiratha and give more preference to such places where huge number of people are found like area hospitals, PHCs, government offices and educational institutions,” said the Minister.

“The officials are behaving negligently in protecting the planted saplings. More than half of the planted saplings in the previous two years withered away. It is the responsibility of the officials concerned to take care of the planted saplings by using tree guards and watering the saplings regularly,” pointed out Tummala.
