Irked over exaggerated numbers of saplings planted

Warangal: As the entire district administration in erstwhile Warangal and elected representatives engaged in planting saplings in a festive spirit, the Opposition leaders were apprehensive on the government claims over number of the plants planted.

The Deputy Chief Minister, K Srihari, planted saplings at Jangaon and Warangal Urban districts while Tribal Welfare Minister A Chandulal participated in the plantation programme in Jayashankar Bhupalpalli and Mahabubabad districts amid much fanfare.

Warangal Urban and Rural district collectors Amrapali Kata and Prashanth J Patil, Jangaon Collector A Devasena, Mahabubabad Collector Preethi Meena and Jayashanker Bhupalpalli District Collector A Murali have claimed to plant more than one crore plants each in their respective districts.

The GWMC Mayor, N Narender, asserted that 10 lakh saplings would be planted under the corporation limits. However, the city Congress working president Rajanala Srihari has doubted the claims being made by the officials. He said that everyone was giving a target not less than one crore.

The Mayor said that there were 66 lakh saplings available at 34 nurseries under the corporation limits. “I plead them to show the nurseries and the saplings for the sake of public, all their claims are false and misguiding,” he noted.

Srihari speaking to presspersons in Warangal on Wednesday demanded the State government ensure tagging of each sapling planted as it could be easy to enumerate total number of saplings planted under the third phase of Haritha Haram.

He also wanted to reveal the survival rate of the saplings so far planted across the district. More than 80 per cent of the saplings planted have perished as there was none to care for them. Instead of giving priority to numbers, the government should focus on protecting the saplings planted.
