Mahbubnagar: In order to rehabilitate the Gudumba makers and people involved in its sale, the district has spent Rs 7.93 crores to provide alternative livelihood.

The district administration has identified more than 400 families, dependent on Gudumba manufacture and sale, and offered an amount of Rs 7.9 crore through financial support and bank loans.

As part of this, Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao along with Health Minister Dr C Laxma Reddy and MLA Srinivas Goud distributed rehabilitation certificates to the families on Tuesday. Most of these Gudumba rehabilitants were given financial support up to Rs 2 lakh to establish their own business.

The Excise department has played a key role in ensuring that these families shun the illegal Gudumba business and counseled them to opt for alternative sources. “Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao wants to bring a change in the society.

Particularly, the Gudumba menace in the rural areas has destroyed many families. Many lost their lives to Gudumba addiction and many families have come on roads.

With efforts of the officials and the determination of the district administration to make the district a Gudumaba, the Gudumba makers are rehabilitated with alternative livelyhood sources,” said Minister Harish Rao.
