Warangal: World Population Day was observed here on Tuesday by government and non-government agencies stressing on the need of family planning. Seminars were held and rallies were taken out signifying this year's World Population Day theme ‘Family Planning: Empowering People, Developing Nations’.

AVV Junior College NSS wing and Lions Club of Warangal took out a rally in association with the district medical and health department. The DMHO, Dr Harish Raj, flagged the rally. Speaking on the occasion, the official highlighted the importance of creating awareness among students on the impact of population growth on environment, economy and employment opportunities.

Speaking at a seminar at AVV Junior College, an environmentalist retired Prof Thakur Rathan Singh said birth control is the only choice to curb population growth which is leading to problems like poverty, lack of employment and others.

NSS programme coordinator K Srinivasa Rao said theme of World Population Day aims at providing safe, voluntary family planning to the people around the world. While the world population stands over seven billion, India stands at number two with nearly 1.31 billion people.

The college secretary Chanda Vijay Kumar, principal D Raghupathi, the Lions Club president A Bhujender Reddy and others were present.
