Warangal Urban: Parkal MLA Challa Dharma Reddy urged farmers in the district not to commit suicides. Participating in a programme organised by Sarvodaya Youth Organisation, he distributed loans to widows of farmers in Hanamkonda on Friday.

He appealed to the widows to utilise their money properly and become financially strong. The MLA said committing suicide would not resolve any of their issues and instead, leave their families orphaned. He expressed concern at farmers resorting to suicides whenever the crops failed due to vagaries of nature.

He said that some farmers were taking even the small debts seriously and committing suicides as they failed to clear them. Such tendency was not advisable and the farmers should make use of various government welfare schemes meant for them to address their problems, Dharma Reddy added.

The organisation secretary P Damodar said that since 1997, nearly 2,500 farmers have committed suicide in Warangal district. The organisation has lent a financial assistance of Rs 50,000 to 300 families to help them build small enterprises. The beneficiaries could repay the loans in easy installments, he added.

A total of Rs 5 lakhs were distributed to 10 widows hailing from Geesukonda mandal in Warangal rural district. Elected representatives N Venkateshwara Rao, Dharma Rao and others were present on the occasion.
