Mahbubnagar: Even though the district is facing regular drought and severe water scarcity during summer, the lackadaisical attitude of officials of District Water Management Agency (DWMA) has lead to the delay in the construction of water sheds for the last one year in Mahbubnagar.

Though the district is receiving adequate rains this season, the delay in the construction of water sheds in time reflects the apathy and lack of planning by concerned authorities. As a result, the rain water is going down the drains without being stored or recharged into the ground.

As already the water table has gone deep down to 52 meters in some areas of the district, the construction of check dams, water sheds and other water recharging pits was very much necessary. Even though the DWMA has been entrusted with the works of carrying out 21 works of construction of open pits, check dams, check valves, DDS, lose bolts and other earthen works under NREGS, the authorities have not yet taken up these works in some of the villages.

For instance, in Gangapur village under Jadcherla mandal, the district administration has sanctioned Rs 3.45 crore to take up the water shed and check dam construction over an area of 10,000 acres, till now the concerned DWMA and NREGA authorities have spent only Rs 2 crore and are yet to complete the remaining works, which are left pending for the last one year.

Expressing his displeasure over the slow pace of works, particularly the check dams and water sheds in Mahbubnagar, District Collector Ronald Rose has taken a serious note of the issue and directed the authorities to immediately take up the pending works and complete them as early as possible.

“We have observed a delay in the construction of check dams and water shed projects in the district. We have sought reasons for the delay and directed the Project Officers, Technical Assistants and other concerned officials of DWMA and NREGA to expedite the works as per the detailed project report,” informed the Collector during a review meeting with the officials of DWMA and NREGA recently.
