Warangal Urban: In response to the bandh call given by several left-wing students’ organisations, a majority of private and government schools and colleges remained closed in the district on Friday.

The members and leaders of PDSU, AISF, SFI, PDSU, AISB, AIFDS, AIPSU, BCVS, DSU, TVV and TSF took out rallies, staged dharnas and organised road blockades at several places. Several student leaders were arrested by police while they were taking out a protest rally from Hanamkonda Government Junior College to the district Collectorate. They were taken to Hanamkonda police station and released later.

Speaking to the media, B Narasimha Rao of PDSU, N Ashok Stalin of AISF and T Malathi of SFI alleged that the government was deceiving the students. It was planning to close nearly 4,600 schools while claiming to increase enrollments in the government schools with ‘Badi bata’ programme.

The students union leaders said that even after three years of TRS rule, a large number of posts of teachers, lecturers and professors were still lying vacant rendering the state run educational institutions ineffective. Those who were joining private schools and colleges were being looted by the managements who were collecting huge amount of fees, they complained.

The activists of AISB, SFI and AISF have organised road blockades at MGM Centre while several others led by Durgam Saraiah, E Vijay Khanna of PDSU, B Santhosh of SFI, Jannu Ashok of AISF, Avinash of DSU and Md. Rohith of AISB staged dharna at the Collectorate.

They demanded immediate steps towards implementation of free KG to PG education to all, release of pending scholarships and fee reimbursement dues, introduce mid-day meals at junior colleges and to bring out legislation to regulate collection of fees at private institutions.

The protesting students have also demanded a circular issued by Sangareddy district collector prohibiting student organisations from involving school children in their protest programmes.
