Desiring to promote book reading among school children, ‘Topudu Bandi’, an initiative taken up by former journalist Sheik Sadiq Ali aka ‘Topudu Bandi Sadiq’, is seriously engaged in setting up libraries at the state-run schools.
Warangal Urban: Desiring to promote book reading among school children, ‘Topudu Bandi’, an initiative taken up by former journalist Sheik Sadiq Ali aka ‘Topudu Bandi Sadiq’, is seriously engaged in setting up libraries at the state-run schools.
Having toured across Telangana distributing books freely to students on a pushcart (Topudu bandi) a year ago and in the slums of Warangal city during this summer, he found that the students were desperately in need of books. He then came up with the idea of establishing school libraries and village libraries as a charity work.
“So far we have set up 112 libraries at villages across Telangana. There are many requests to set up libraries in villages and schools across Warangal Urban and Warangal Rural districts”, Sadiq Ali told The Hans India here on Friday.
He informed that 16 school libraries and four village libraries would be set up on July 24, 25 and 26 in Nallabelly mandal of Warangal Rural district. The books covering subjects like personality development, computer knowledge, besides story books for children would be distributed to the libraries. If the students asked for any specific titles, efforts would be made to provide them, Sadiq added.
He said the selection of books was made in such a way that they would be useful for children of different standards. About 112 libraries were set up across Telangana so far. The libraries would comprise racks, tables and chairs. It is our aim to set up as many libraries as possible across Telangana and AP, Ali said.In order to streamline all this work, the process of establishing ‘ Topudu Bandi Foundation’ has started, he added. Impressed with the work being carried out by Topudu Bandi Sadiq, several non-resident Indians are also extending support in setting up libraries.
An NRI from Hyderabad Sujitha Kompally along with 36 other NRIs mobilised $ 3,000 to establish libraries in Warangal.
On Thursday, Sujitha attended the inauguration of a library at Government Higher Primary School at Basith Nagar in Hanamkonda. Two more libraries are going to be set up in Hanamkonda on Friday and Saturday under the aegis of Topudu Bandi, she informed.
MLA D Vinay Bhaskar has also assured support to the initiative of Sadiq Ali while advising him to continue his good work for the benefit of the underprivileged children.
