Pithapuram: Horticulture officials are advocatingpruning of branches of mango trees to slash the cost of pesticide and fertilizer application. According to the officials taking care of the trees only during the season will have an adverse impact on mango quality.Pruning the branches during monsoon season would yield fruitful results, according to the officials.

As part of the crop management, Horticulture official N Sujata demonstrated methods of pruning the trees to farmers. After harvesting mangoes, the trees should be left untended for one month. Later the dried branches and branches with overgrown leaves should be pruned. Pruning the leaves in the shape of umbrella exposes the tree to sunlight leading to death of larvae of various insects. Long-branch cutters should be used to prune the branches.

To prevent fungus and viruses infecting the tree through the cut branches, Bordeaux mixture should be applied. Care should be taken to mix the slaked lime with copper sulphate but not vice versa. Mango garden needs to be ploughed to remove the weed in the garden.

The garden should be intercropped with jute and Jeelugu to increase soil fertility. To supplement the micro nutrients nitrogen, phosphorous and potash should be applied in equal quantity. Organic manure and vermicompost should be applied to ensure the healthy growth of plants.
