Warangal: Lack of road connectivity to Government Upper Primary School in Hanamkonda is thwarting the development works at the school and causing untold difficulties to the students and staff. The school surrounded by closely built houses in a thickly populated slum, called Nanya Thanda near National Institute of Technology (NIT) Warangal, has nearly five decades history.
It was set up on the NIT campus back in 1960 with the name REC Patak for the children of the Institute staff and students from nearby localities also used to study at the school. The State government took over it and allotted teachers at that time.
It was run on the campus till 2012 and later was relocated at the thanda, a habitation came up years ago with the construction labourers worked in NIT construction erected temporary sheds and later built permanent houses.
The relocation of the school took place as the staff at the NIT inclined towards private schools. With grant provided by Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) a single storied structure with four rooms was built during 2012-13. But the road leading to the school was encroached by a neighbour, who built a compound wall.
This forced the students to take a detour through the alleys. “We are often becoming targets of stray dogs and daily subjected to admonishing by locals for passing through their homes,” complained a sixth-class student, called Shanker.
During last rainy season, the peon at the school Sk Sarwar has broken his leg while coming to school as fell into an overflowing side drain. “We have taken the issue to the notice of Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation authorities in 2014. Similarly, petitions are also submitted to the District Collector and the DEO. But we could not get the issue resolved yet,” said the School Headmaster, A Dhata Maharshi.
Speaking to The Hans India, he informed that acting on their petition, Corporation officials issued notice to the concerned party. But he approached the district court. The officials were expressing their helplessness to resolve the matter on the pretext of court case.
Now, it is decided to build a dining hall for the students as funds under SSA are released towards development works. But contractors are unwilling to execute the work as construction material can’t be taken to the work site due to narrow passages and encroachment of the main passage, Maharshi explained.
According to him, they need four more rooms as there are nearly 120 students enrolled at the school and classes from nursery to seventh are run by seven teachers. And out of four rooms, one is used as staff room and three are used to run classes. The school verandah is also used to run the classes.
In addition to this problem, the drainage water from surrounding areas passes through the school premises. ‘We appeal the officials concerned to look into the plight of the school and resolve the issues,” the teachers at the school appealed.
