Suryapet: The farmers of the Suryapet district can soon heave a sigh of relief with the Phase 2 works of Sriram Sagar Project (SRSP) going on at a brisk pace.

It may be recalled that Minister G Jagadish Reddy has recently requested the Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao and Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao for completion of works and repairs to the canals and other structures of the project, which were neglected by the previous governments in united Andhra Pradesh.

According to official sources, as many as 2,13,175 acres in the district would get irrigation waters once the works of SRSP-2 complete.

The works, which were started to provide water to 4 lakh acres in drought- prone erstwhile Nalgonda district, Khammam and Warangal districts, are underway with sanctioned amount of Rs 1,321 crores. Works were stalled from 2005 to 2014 under united Andhra rulers.

After the formation of Telangana, state government had successfully provided water to another 51,000 acres land under SRSP-2 ayacut. Similarly, government is paying special attention to address all the issues of ayacut farmers.

Stating that works would be wrapped up 2018, Irrigation Engineer in Chief (Admin) Nagender Rao added that water from SRSP-Phase 2 could not reach some parts of Nalgonda, Khammam and Warangal districts due to damaged lining and silt in Kakatiya main canal. He said the issues would be resolved through ongoing repair works.

Under the project, nearly 2,13,175 acres in Tungathurthi, Suryapet and Kodad assembly constituencies in Suryapet district, 75,262 acres in Khammam and 1,09,512 acres in Warangal districts would get irrigation facility.

To provide water to tail end lands of the project, government is carrying works of controlling structural leakages, pending works as well as repairs and silt removing works of distributaries under NREGS scheme.

Similarly, the works of Udayasamudram Lift Irrigation Project also gathered pace in Munugodu, Nalgonda and Nakrekal constituencies in Nalgonda district. Officials concerned informed that the project works were likely to be completed by the end of December next year.
