Warangal: The students of National Institute of Technology Warangal (NIT-W) are waging an online war against the authorities’ decision of prescribing 7.5 Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) for contesting Students Council elections.

The students, who have taken up a flash protest on the NIT-W campus till late evening hours of Thursday, have launched a signature campaign on Friday. The sources informed that nearly 3,000 students have joined the campaign against the new guidelines set for contesting the elections.

In addition to that students have been using the social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook to express their ire against the authorities.

They even sent messages to the Union Human Resources Development Minister Prakash Javadekar and others regarding the issue.

The tweets sent to Javadekar runs like this: ‘academic performance was never criteria till this day, then why now????

‘If a chailwala can become the Prime Minister of India, why can’t be a first-class student for president?’ ‘Discrimination politics in NITW to suppress students’ voice please look into the issue and avoid protests from students’

Another student appeals the Union HRD Minister. ‘I really hope that good sense prevails over vanity; for there is lot of difference between ‘leader and academician…’ goes on another tweet.

‘Day light murder of democracy, clear cut violation of Lyngdoh committee recommendations’ is complaint of yet another student.

As the students are pouring out their anger on online; a group of students have on the day met Warangal Urban District Collector Amrapali Kata and took the issue to her notice.

A student on the condition of anonymity informed The Hans India that if the issue is not resolved by Sunday, students are planning to go for a mass protest and rally from the NIT-W main gate to the district Collectorate on Monday.

‘We wish to boycott the elections and let the institute authorities handle all the affairs of the students’, he said adding ‘if required we would file public interest litigation (PIL) in the court regarding the matter’.
