Nirmal: With the onset of monsoon in June, no one would have imagined that rains in the district would almost fall to zero level. There is no rainfall in the district during the two months.

Farmers are badly hit by this season and they are struggling to make ends meet . A drought like situation is staring at Nirmal district.

Although the kharif season has begun with good rains initially, the situation began turning from bad to worse. With rainfall levels falling drastically, only 2,200 hectares of land out of the 16,238 hectares across the district have turned productive leaving out 85% of the crop unirrigated. There have been no rains for the last 30 days and the weather forecast gives no chance of any rains in the future.

Even the sources of the water like dams and lakes around the district have dried up more due to the humid temperatures in the rainy season.

With no rains in the distinct future, farmers are not in a position to clear their debts. They face a bleak future. Expecting good rains this season, they borrowed loans.

Speaking to The Hans India here on Tuesday, Laxma Reddy, a farmer from Kamole said, “I took a loan from the bank expecting a good yield on the crops which could help me raise my income and meet my expenses.

But now, the conditions have worsened so critically that I cannot meet the daily expenses of my family. Hope the officials concerned sympathise with my plight and extend a helping hand for farmers suffering like me”.

Similarly, other farmers, echoing the same feelings, expressed the hope that the officials of the Agriculture Department come to their rescue.
