Hanamkonda: Three-day XXVI Congress of AP Society for Mathematical Sciences (APSMS) has got underway at Kakatiya University here on Friday.

The KU department of mathematics is organising the event for the second time at the university. Speaking after inaugurating the congress, the University Vice-Chancellor Prof R Sayanna has said mathematical models offer solutions to various scientific problems and the subject plays a key role in information technology field.
Students should develop analytical and logical thinking to excel in the subject, he suggested.

Delivering the keynote address, Dravidian University former Vice-Chancellor Prof PV Arunachalam said that beginning with Greek mathematician Pythagoras in 550 BC, several scientists have revealed brilliant mathematical theories.

A research paper by Manindra Agrawal, Neeraj Kayal and Nitin Saxena, Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur on prime numbers, has won accolades from scientists from across the world.

The AKS primality test (Agrawal–Kayal–Saxena primality test and cyclotomic AKS test) they proposed was the first algorithm to determine whether any given number is prime or composite within polynomial time, he said while explain recent developments in the field.

The APSMS president Prof T Srinivas who presided over the inaugural session informed that the university conducted the event in 2006. The current congress is aimed at highlighting the latest research activity in the field of mathematics.

12 endowment lectures and 10 invited lectures would take place during the event and 150 research papers would be presented. The general body meeting of the APSMS would take place as part of the congress, said the society general secretary T Nagaiah and the event organising secretary M Thirumala Devi.
