Striking Dak Sevaks and bank employees taken to streets and stage dharnas

Warangal: The striking Dak Sevaks and bank employees have taken to the streets in the city on Tuesday in support of their demands.

Large numbers of Dak Sevaks, who were on an indefinite strike since August 16, have staged half-naked protest at Warangal head post office on the day, under the aegis of All India Grameen Dak Sevak’s Union (AIGDSU).

The union leaders alleged that the Central government has been exploiting the labour of Dak Sevaks by paying poor wages since several decades.

Despite the claim by Union Labour Minister B Dattatreya that minimum wage should be Rs 10, 000 per month, Dak Sevaks were being paid only Rs 7,000 to Rs 8,000 per month. The main demand of the Dak Sevaks was to regularise their services by evolving a scheme to absorb them into regular work force. All the benefits being given to departmental staff should be extended to Dak Savaks.

The Dak Sevaks should be brought into Seventh Pay Commission and stop treating them with a partisan attitude. The government must implement GDS committee report with the amendments suggested by the AIGDSU, demanded the union leaders Khader Hussain, A Ravinder and Shahbuddin.

They wanted pension to Dak Sevaks as per the directions issued by Delhi Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) principal bench and Madras CAT bench. The postal officials must stop harassing Dak Sevaks in the name of targets.

Meanwhile, the postal operations in the district came to a standstill in view of the Dak Sevaks strike. Warangal Division Postal Superintendent M Narasimha Raju has informed that alternate arrangements were made to address the problem. The public could obtain their parcels and mail by producing their ID cards at their post offices, he said.

On the other hand, employees of different public sector banks have staged dharnas at their branches in view of the nation-wide strike called by United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU). Stoppage of banks mergers and consolidations, opposed writing off of NPAs and increasing service charges in the name of GST were among their demands.
