Mahabubnagar: As the government was planning to celebrate the upcoming floral festival of ‘Bathukamma’ in a big way this year, the district administration of Mahabubnagar is gearing up to distribute ‘Bathukamma Saris’ to more than 4.60 lakh beneficiaries in the district.

Bathukamma Panduga is a traditional festival of Telangana State, where women folks take part in huge numbers and exhibit cultural spirit. The women folks prepare Bathukamma, a beautiful flower stack, arranged with different unique seasonal flowers in seven concentric layers in the shape of temple gopuram. In Telugu, ‘Bathukamma' means ‘Mother Goddess come Alive’ and Goddess Maha Gauri ‘Life Giver’ is worshipped in the form of Bathukamma.

As Batukamma festival is women-oriented festival, the State government wants to celebrate this festival with a grand festive fervor. As part of this, the State government is planning to distribute more than 1.455 crore saris to all the white ration card holders across the State.
“We have estimated about 4.60 beneficiaries would get Bathukamma saris in the district and planning to distribute the saris before September 15. Accordingly, we have asked the officials to prepare an action plan,” District Collector Ronald Rose said.

As safe stocking of the saris is a big issue, the district adminsitriaon is taking all measures to stock them at three major points viz., cotton mill godown in Jadcherla, Nabard godowns in Narayanpet and Devarkadra mandals. From these points, the district administration will further distribute it to grama panchayats, mandal revenue offices and municipal offices in different parts of the district.

As the district is having large number of tribal tandas, the officials have been directed to prepare fool proof action plan to ensure that every women folk above 18 years with white ration card will get the sari.

“We have asked officials to publicise this programme in a big way by announcing it through tom-toms in the villages and through other mediums in the urban areas,” the Collector said.
