Illandu: Roads and Buildings Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao, Forest Minister Jogu Ramanna and Panchayat Raj Minister Jupally Krishna Rao on Thursday planted saplings at Lachchagudem village of the mandal in Bhadradri-Kothagudem district as part of the programme of planting one lakh saplings in the village on a single day.

Speaking on the occasion, Forest Minister, who appreciated the villagers’ gesture, stated that the village’s name would be etched in the state’s history.

“The fast depletion of forest cover in Khammam and Adilabad not only pushed 70 per cent of the farmers below the poverty line, but made the wild animals venture into human habitats.

Because of these reasons, the State government has targeted to plant 230 crore saplings in the state and increase the green cover.”

Stating that the State government has embarked on the mega plantation drive to increase the green cover that would eventually bring more rains, Jupally Krishna Rao asked the villagers to use the individual sanitary latrines to ensure sanitation and to keep diseases at bay. He further encouraged them to build rainwater harvesting structures for improving the ground water table.

Appreciating people of Lachchagudem, Tummala Nageswara Rao referred to Mission Bhagiratha, Mission Kakatiya and various irrigation projects.

Mahbubabad MP Prof Sitaram Naik, MLCs Palla Rajeswar Reddy and Balasani Lakshminarayana, ZP Chairperson Gadepalli Kavita, Kothagudem legislator Jalagam Venkat Rao, SC Corporation Chairman Pidamarthi Ravi, Civil Supplies Corporation Chairman Sudarsan Reddy and others participated in the programme that was presided over by Illandu legislator Koram Kanakayya.
